Ordinance was introduced to make Constitutional Council more active: Minister Gurung

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications and Information Technology has clarified that the government had brought ordinance in compulsion since some forces were trying to hold the government hostage and make it a ‘lame duck’.

Minister Gurung asserted that the ordinance was introduced to kill the ‘virus’ kind of ill and dangerous political tendencies spreading at the time when everyone needed to forge a unity to tide over adverse effects of COVID-19 in all sectors.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli had introduced an ordinance to amend the Constitutional Council Act (Functions, duties and procedures) 2010 on December 15 which was approved by President Bidya Devi Bhandari on December 15 itself.

Gurung was of view that it would be fatal for the constriction and democracy of the constitutional bodies were becoming leaderless and argued that the ordinance was introduced to make a headway to make the Constitutional Commission more active.

Gurung, also spokesperson for the government, said, “The government was compelled to make this move out of compulsion as some forces were active in making the nation and constitution a failure.”

He further clarified that if there was an environment to make the Constitutional Council more active to decide on the formation of Commissions, the government would not have even thought of introducing an ordinance. RSS
