BRICS Summit: Modi and Jinping to meet amid Ladakh border standoff

NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will come face-to-face with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Brics Summit today just a week after they met virtually at the SCO Summit.

This is the second time Modi and Xi will attend the virtual meet amid the prolonged standoff between the two countries in Ladakh.

PM Modi is attending the virtual summit of the Brics group which will focus on cooperation in counter-terrorism, health, trade, energy and ways to offset the impact of COVID-19.

Likewise, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and Russian President Vladimir Putin will also attend the 12th summit of the Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa grouping.

The BRICS comes at a time when India and China continue to be locked in the bitter border standoff in eastern Ladakh for over six months.

The BRICS is a bloc that represents over 3.6 billion people, or half of the world’s population. The BRICS nations have a combined GDP of $16.6 trillion.
