Bamdev Gautam says he will boost National Assembly’s dignity

KATHMANDU: Newly-nominated National Assembly member Bamdev Gautam has said that he has entered the upper house to enhance its grace.

After taking oath from National Assembly Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina at Singha Durbar on Thursday, Gautam thanked the Nepal Communist Party (NCP), the Prime Minister and the President for nominating him to the upper house.

“I have come to the National Assembly to carry out my duties as per Nepal’s constitution and the rules of procedure of the assembly to enhance its dignity,” Gautam said.

He said that while performing a member’s role, he would always be loyal to Nepal’s independence, sovereignty, and the Nepali people.

“The NCP has come forward following the constitution to establish socialism in Nepal,” he said. “I will dedicate myself to that. I have no other purpose, goal or interest than that.”

Earlier today, President Bidya Devi Bhandari had nominated Gautam as the member of the upper house on the Council of Ministers’ recommendation.

A meeting of the cabinet held on Monday evening had recommended his name before the President.

Gautam had lost the parliamentarian elections held in 2017. He had fought the elections from Bardiya-1, representing the then left alliance.

It should be noted that Gautam had unsuccessfully tried to become a member of the House of Representatives through the backdoor, even by calling back the lawmakers from Kathmandu and Dolpa.

However, he backed off from this move after it courted controversies from all quarters.
