SAC instructs govt to decide on Citizenship Bill within 5 days

KATHMANDU: The parliamentary State Affairs Committee (SAC) has directed the government to make consensus on the Citizenship Bill within five days.

The bill is currently under consideration in the SAC since August 21, 2018.

It should be noted that the SAC had discussed the proposal to provide citizenship to a woman marrying a Nepali person seven years after marriage.

The committee, however, failed to forge consensus on the issue.

According to Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, the citizenship issue being extremely sensitive, they needed some time to finalize the issue.

According to Committee Chair Shashi Shrestha, political consensus has to be forged on the issue.

Lawmaker of Nepali Congress (NC) Dilendra Badu, too, emphasized on political consensus among the leadership on the issue.
