KATHMANDU: Over 248,000 have been diagnosed with the coronavirus in a single day.

More than 21.6 million people have been infected with the coronavirus pandemic that has been spreading around the globe for the seven and a half months. A total of 248,817 new cases were reported throughout the globe in a single day as of Sunday morning.

The number of deaths worldwide in the last 24 hours is 5,152 that took the number of deaths to 768,603.

Out of total cases, 14.3 million (66.30 percent) have recovered so far while others are undergoing treatment.

Coronavirus has killed 202,927 people in European countries. European countries had witnessed 3.14 million cases and 1.9 million have recovered so far.

A total of 246,680 people have died in North American countries. The number of infections has reached 6.5 million. Of them, 3.5 million have been declared infection-free.

Similarly, 118,661 people have died in Asian countries. Out of 5.57 million people infected, 4.27 million have recovered and at least 147,528 people have died in South American countries. Of the 5.21 million infected, 3.74 million have recovered.

In African countries, 25,377 people have died as 1.11 million have been infected. Out of the infected, 827,988 have won their fight against coronavirus.

At least 405 people have been killed in Oceania and Australia. Of the 25,132 people infected, 15,349 have recovered.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic crossed another grim milestone in India when the death toll from the virus went past 50,000 on Saturday, Indian media reported.

More than a fourth of these fatalities — 27% of the total — have been reported in the first 15 days of August alone, according to Times of India.

Over 13,500 deaths have been reported from across the country so far this month. By contrast, the whole of July saw a total of 19,122 fatalities.
