Home Ministry scraps all vehicle passes



KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to revoke all the passes issued within the district in a bid to tighten the lockdown after the coronavirus infection started spreading at an alarming rate.

With this decision to be implemented from Saturday, all passes except for essential services will be scrapped.

A meeting held at the Ministry on Thursday decided to revoke all the passes issued for vehicles within the district with effect from May 16, said Umakanta Adhikari, Deputy Secretary at the Ministry.

All 77 District Administration Offices, Ministries of Internal Affairs, and Law of all the seven provinces, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force have been instructed to strictly implement the decision.

Earlier, the ministry had scrapped all the inter-district vehicle passes effective from today following a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases.

The government had decided to let 42 different industries operate since last Friday. Similarly, one-third of the employees of government offices in Kathmandu Valley have been instructed to attend office.

It had resulted in traffic gridlock in Kathmandu mainly during rush hours.

The ministry has also directed the concerned authorities to further tighten the lockdown in the Kathmandu Valley enforced to stem the spread of coronavirus.

The Ministry instructed the Chief of the Metropolitan Police Office, Ranipokhari, the chief of the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division, the chief district officers of the three districts and the mayor of the metropolis to tighten the noose.
