NCP holding Standing Committee meeting today

KATHMANDU: The ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) is holding its Standing Committee meeting today.

According to Standing Committee member Haribol Gajurel, the meeting has been slated for 11 am at the party headquarters in Dhumbarahi.

It should be noted that some 20 Standing Committee members had handed over a memorandum to Chairpersons KP Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda ‘to convene the meeting after the government introduced two controversial ordinances that were later withdrawn.

The meeting is likely to discuss the government’s activities, budget, policies and programs, Lipu Lekh issue, among others.

Following rounds of talks between dissenting leaders, a Secretariat meeting of the party on May 2 had decided to summon the Standing Committee meeting on May 7, which, however, was postponed following intra-party disputes.

As the dispute escalated in the Secretariat meeting, the meeting ended without any conclusion after Chairman Oli walked out of the meeting that pushed the Standing Committee meeting into uncertainty.

Leaders of the top rung are at loggerheads after PM Oli brought two ordinances (later revoked) three weeks back in an effort to secure his position as the PM and to further strengthen his grip in the party.
