KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli was irked with Deputy Prime Minister Ishwor Pokhrel for recommending relaxation of the nationwide lockdown.
Minister Pokhrel, who also heads the high-level committee for coronavirus, had recommended the government to gradually relax the lockdown and open up businesses.
In today’s cabinet meeting, PM Oli asked the ministers whether the lockdown has been properly implemented in Kathmandu.
“I could see traffic jam in Kathmandu…people are seen travelling, stores are open, and it seems that lockdown is fully implemented here,” the PM expressed sarcasm in the meeting.
Deputy Prime Minister Pokhrel responded, “The gradual relaxing of the lockdown is aimed at opening essential services only.”
“PM Oli wasn’t convinced,” a source said. “The Prime Minister told the ministers that people’s health was more important than economy. Why do people need money or valuables when they do not have their health?” PM Oli asked Minister Pokhrel.
“If this continues, the situation will go out of control,” the source quoted PM Oli as saying urging one and all to remain extremely cautious and responsible.
The government had last week decided to relax some 42 sectors and industries.
