Social distancing measures being set up at TIA

The Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) is making changes to the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) to implement social distancing.

The check-in counter area of the domestic terminal has been changed so that passengers could maintain social distancing as they queue for boarding pass.

Along with the social distance, CAAN is making arrangements for the passengers to undergo mandatory health check-ups as well as sanitizers.

30 industries operational in Hetauda Industrial Estate

As many as 30 industries are currently in operation in the Hetauda Industrial Estate. Manager of the the management office, Rajendra Kandel informed, “We have asked the industries to operate in a safe manner, but due to lack of raw materials, markets and transportation, the industries have not been able to operate at full capacity,” he said.

He said that it would be difficult to run the industry as only 25 percent of the manpower in the industrial sector is from Makwanpur and others are from outside.

US unemployment surges to 14.7%

The COVID-19 crisis has sent US unemployment surging to almost 14.7% — the level last seen when the US was in the throes of the depression. The unemployment rate now stands at 23.6%, which is close to the Depression peak of nearly 25%.

According to the Labor Department, around 20.5 million jobs vanished in April this year — in the worst monthly loss on record. This was triggered by the shutdowns of stores, factories, offices and other businesses.

China hands over 40,000 PCR kits to Nepal

China has handed over 40,000 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) testing kits to Nepal. Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Hou Yanqi handed over the testing kits to Minister for Health and Population Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal amid a program.

Medical items including 40,000 PCR kits, 20,000 N95 masks, 800,000 surgical masks and 10,000 medical glasses were handed over to the minister.
