DUBAI: An employee at a private firm that sells services of a telecom provider is standing trial in Dubai on multiple charges, including bribery.

The 30-year-old Nepali ex-pat reportedly approached an employee at the telecom firm, offering him a bribe of Rs 46500 (Dh1,500) for every phone sale transaction he would approve without meeting terms and conditions. One of those conditions is presenting a credit card for the phone application, the Dubai Court of First Instance has heard.

He allegedly told the staff that he had 63 customers, who needed such unlawful favors, and that the number could reach 138, promising him Rs 2015400 (Dh65,000) in total kickbacks.

The staff, who reported the incident to the police, made him believe that he took the offer and, for that matter, a transaction was run.

Investigations revealed that the main defendant was offering the illegal deal on behalf of a 28-year-old Pakistani clerk – also charged in the case – from whom he collected Rs 400 (Dh150) as a bribe.

Another Pakistani ex-pat, 29, is accused of criminal complicity. He reportedly took a phone worth Rs 161000 (Dh5,200) through the fraud.

The main defendant allegedly received Rs 51000 (Dh1,650) in bribes for him and the telecom staff, who informed the cops.

The fraud was reported on September 24 last year at Al Rafaa police station.

A police officer told the prosecutor that the CID responded to the complaint as soon as it was filed.

“In a sting operation, we caught the main defendant red-handed around 8.30 pm at a café in a shopping center.”

All the three accused have been detained.

The trial will continue on February 25.
