IT Bill a ploy to impose authoritarian regime: Dr Koirala

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has urged the government to immediately withdraw the Information Technology Bill saying that it would curtail people’s rights to information.

Issuing a statement, Dr Koirala said the bill introduced to monitor social media platforms has been aimed at suppressing the people’s voice. “This is against universal norms and principles besides being undemocratic and against the rule of law,” he said adding that it would be not be acceptable to NC at any cost.

This, he said, has come as a part of undemocratic exercise and ploy to impose an authoritarian regime by controlling the media, writers, journalists, cartoonists, and the public and put them behind bars.
