KATHMANDU: The death toll of Nepalis around the globe due to coronavirus has reached 78.
According to the data provided by Health Committee under the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), 51 Nepalis have died in the UK and 15 in the USA.
According to the committee, 12 people died in New York, two in Colorado and one in Virginia.
Similarly, six Nepalis have in the UAE and one each in Ireland, Japan, Turkey, the Netherlands, Bahrain and Sweden due to coronavirus so far, Chairman at Health Committee Dr. Sanjeev Sapkota said.
Sapkota said that 5,472 non-resident Nepalis around the world have been infected with the coronavirus.
According to figures compiled by a group of non-resident Nepali medical experts from around the world, non-resident Nepalis have died in nine countries, while Nepalis in the remaining 20 countries have been infected with the pandemic.
Meanwhile, 22 Nepali women workers of a cleaning company in Sharjah, the UAE have been infected with the coronavirus. All the infected people used to do sanitation work.
A total of 61 people working for the company were diagnosed with coronavirus on Friday.
Among the infected are 22 Nepali women workers, said Pasang Sherpa, vice president of NRNA UAE.
According to Sherpa, the company’s management has set them aside by setting up its own quarantine.
“When 140 workers of the company were tested, 61 workers were found positive, ‘he said, “Out of them, 22 are Nepalis. The company has set up its own quarantine and kept them separate.”
However, the company’s quarantine does not have separate bathrooms, so there is a risk of coronavirus transmission to other women who have not yet been infected, he said, adding that there are other Nepali women workers in the company.
Meanwhile, the NRNA has provided relief support to 35,000 NRNs in different countries who were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. They were provided with food supplies and medical support including face marks, sanitizer and medicines, according to NRNA General Secretary Dr. Hem Raj Sharma.
The NRNA has also been providing counseling services through its 24-hour hotline service.
