PM Oli hopeful of 19th SAARC Summit at early date

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Oli has expressed the hope that SAARC (South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation) members would come up with a consensus to organize the 19th SAARC Summit soon.

Speaking after visiting the SAARC Secretariat in Kathmandu today, Prime Minister Oli, who is also the current Chair of the regional organization, said he was confident that the Summit would be held at the earliest.

PM Oli expressed his eagerness to hand over the Chair of SAARC to Pakistan and recalled that the 18th Kathmandu Summit had laid emphasis on a deeper integration for peace and prosperity in the South Asian region.

He added that the Head of the SAARC States and governments had expressed commitments to the principles and objectives of the organization.

“SAARC leaders had agreed to reinvigorate regional cooperation and revitalize SAARC as an effective vehicle to fulfill the developmental aspirations for the peoples of South Asia,” he said.

Saying that SAARC has been a common identity of the people of South Asia, PM Oli added that the organization was the representation of hope of 1.7 billion people of this region.

PM Oli also reiterated that Nepal, as a founding member and current SAARC Chair, believed in regional cooperation in order to promote the collective well-being of the people of South Asia.
