Breaking taboo, NA mobilizes female soldiers for managing corpses of COVID-19 infected

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Army (NA) has mobilized female soldiers to manage the bodies of people dying from the coronavirus. The national army has provided special training for handling and managing corpses.

According to the NA Directorate of Public Relations, a week-long training was given to female soldiers working in Valley Division.

NA Spokesperson Santosh Ballav Poudel said that they have already cremated six bodies.

“This is a new use by the military for women’s empowerment,” media reports quoted Poudel as saying; “We want to spread the message that women can contribute equally in every field necessary for the nation. Under this step, female soldiers have been used in cremation.”

A woman touching a dead body is still a cultural taboo in Nepal.
