COVID-19: 89 Nepalis infected, 3 die worldwide

KATHMANDU: 89 Nepalis at home and around the world have got infected by coronavirus to date.  Eight out of them have recovered and returned home when 3 have lost their lives.

“Nine in Nepal and 80 outside the country have got corona infection,” sources at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs said, “3 of them have died when 8 recovered and returned home.” According to the sources, there are 78 people undergoing treatment in various hospitals worldwide.

With the spread of coronavirus, MoFA had asked the diplomatic missions worldwide to update the status of Nepalis worldwide on a regular basis.

Most of the cases in Nepal are from the returnees but the case has entered the second phase with the transmission spreading in the locals.

Nepal confirmed 3 new cases of virus infection on  Saturday in which 1 was the local transmission. According to MoFA, there are 20 Nepalis infected in the USA. One Nepali has lost life in the USA in the COVID-19 case.

According to the Ministry, there are 2 in India, 1 in Hong Kong, 1 in Japan, 2 in Kuwait, 2 in Malaysia, 12 in Bahrain, when eight in UAE, Spain, Australia, Portugal, and the UK  each suffering from coronavirus. Among them, 2 have lost lives in the UK.

1 in Nepal, 4 in Spain, 2 in UAE and 1 in Australia have returned home after recovery.

The coronavirus with its first case in Wuhan China in the last of December has spread to 205 countries of the world. There are more than 3.5 million Nepalis outside Nepal. The widespread pandemic has exposed millions of Nepalis working in different parts of the world at risk.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, 1356 tests have been carried out in Nepal to date. Out of 9 infected people, 1 has returned home after recovery when 8 are undergoing treatment in designated hospital’s isolation.

More than 26.5 thousand quarantine and 3 thousand isolation beds prepared so far

The nation has canceled all international flights from Mar 23 and declared nationwide lockdown effective from Mar.24. Earlier, Nepal had stopped issuing visas on arrival visas to foreigners.

After lockdown, the government has intensified the preparation of quarantine and isolation beds. More tests are conducted targeting the suspected coronavirus case and the tests are carried out in all seven provinces now.

There are 26,587 quarantine beds in which 8282 people are kept current.

Up to Friday 3113 isolation beds are prepared and 105 suspected coronavirus patients are kept.
