Nepal slips six spots in World Press Freedom Index



KATHMANDU: Nepal has slipped six spots in the World Press Freedom Index for 2020 made public by Reporters Without Borders.

According to the index, Nepal slipped six positions when compared to 2019 and is ranked at 112th position. In 2019, Nepal was ranked 106th.

Since 2013, Nepal had reached the highest 100th place in 2017. Last time in 2014, Nepal was ranked 120th which is the worst position for the country.

The situation of Nepal’s neighboring countries is also deplorable in terms of press freedom. In this list of 180 countries, the situation of India is also declining. India is ranked 142nd while China is ranked 177th. Bhutan is 67th, Sri Lanka 127th, Myanmar 139th, Pakistan 145th and Bangladesh 151st.

Norway tops the 2020 Press Freedom Index, while North Korea is placed last.
