COVID19 Impact: 60 Nepali movies hit; 300,000 rendered jobless



KATHMANDU: With the coronavirus pandemic gaining a foothold in the country, the Nepali film industry has been the hardest-hit.

Nepali cinema halls have remained closed since the last six months due to the pandemic, putting the investment of over 1 billion in the industries in jeopardy.

“Around 22 Nepali movies which were about to be released have been held and the pandemic has seriously frustrated the further investment in the movie industries in Nepal,” said Dayaram Dahal, chairman of Film Development Board, Nepal.

Dahal further said that 15 Nepali films were forced to halt their shooting in the middle due to the pandemic while 20 others were making preparations for shooting.

According to Dahal, around 60 Nepali films have been directly hit by the coronavirus, rendering over 300,000 people jobless.
