KATHMANDU: Police have officially notified the Parliament Secretariat about the arrest of Member of Parliament (MP) Maya Rai.
Rai, a Nepali Congress MP, had been on the police’s fugitive list for an extended period in connection with the Swarnalaxmi Cooperative fraud case.
She was arrested from Kathmandu on Saturday. It is customary to inform the Speaker of Parliament when an MP is arrested.
The District Police Range in Kathmandu sent a letter to Speaker Devraj Ghimire, informing him of Rai’s arrest in Kapan by the Kathmandu Valley Crime Investigation Office.
Rai is currently in the custody of the District Police Range, Kathmandu. She had been on the run in connection with the Swarnalaxmi Savings loan fraud case in Kathmandu, where she served two terms on the cooperative’s board of directors.
Rai, originally from Bhojpur, was elected as an MP from the Nepali Congress through the proportional representation quota.
