189 Nepalis abroad succumb to coronavirus so far

28 including 25 in India die in past week



KATHMANDU: A total of 28 Nepalis succumbed to coronavirus pandemic in foreign countries in the past week.

According to the Health Committee under the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), 25 Nepalis died in India, one in South Africa and two in Saudi Arabia.

NRNA Health Committee Coordinator Dr. Sanjeev Sapkota said that 189 Nepalis abroad have died of coronavirus infection till Saturday evening.

According to Dr. Sagar Poudel at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, Nepalis living in the Indian State of Maharashtra are the most affected.

Meanwhile, 35 Nepalis in Luxembourg have been infected with coronavirus during a family gathering. According to the committee, the infection has been confirmed in 35 participants of the family gathering (marriage anniversary). The condition of one of the infected is critical.

So far, Nepalis in 38 countries around the world have been infected with the coronavirus.

Dr. Sapkota stated that Nepalis living in Japan, USA, India, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and some Middle Eastern countries are still contracting coronavirus.

Meanwhile, at the initiative of the NRNA, Government of Nepal and diplomatic missions, 37,424 Nepalis have been rescued from different countries so far.

The government has allowed 54 additional flights to rescue Nepalis living abroad. The rescue flight will run until next Saturday (August 8).
