Locusts spread to 52 districts in Nepal; 27 suffer damage

KATHMANDU: The swarms of locusts have started damaging a large portion of crops after they entered into Nepal.

According to Ram Krishna Subedi, the information officer for Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Center, 7 to 8 million of locusts have already entered into Nepal.

“A large portion of locusts have diverted into the jungle in the wave of winds while some have died while attacking with each other,” said Subedi.

Subedi claimed that the damage to be incurred by the locusts in Nepal would be minimal since the number of mature locusts is very less.

According to Subedi, only 3.5 million among those that entered into Nepal are active in damaging the crops. Others have died after attacking with each other while a large section of them have flown into the jungle, said Subedi.

Currently, locusts have spread to 52 districts of Nepal, of which 27 districts including Rukum and Rolpa are hardest-hit.
