UAE a prospective fruit market for Nepal



KATHMANDU: Opening a new prospect for reducing trade deficit with the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Nepal has tried to focus more on the export of fruits to the Gulf country, of late.

According to Nepali Ambassador to the UAE, Krishna Prasad Dhakal, the Gulf nation imported 7 metric tons of watermelon and 1.5 metric tons of papaya from Nepal on April 29.

“The UAE can fulfill the gap between Nepali farmers and markets place since there is a huge prospect of agricultural cooperation between the two countries”, Ambassador Dhakal added.

Nepal has been exploring the trade market in the UAE in recent years and it might be a lucrative market for the Nepali cereals, food items and herbal products. The latest deal has shown the possibility of exporting fruits in the UAE.

Major exports from Nepal to the UAE include woolen shawls, scarves, carpets, paan-mashala, chewing tobacco, etc. whereas gold, silver, petro-bitumen, lubricating oil etc., are the major importable items from the UAE.

Dhakal assured to contribute substantively to enhance bilateral trade between the UAE and Nepal in coming days.

Nepal and the United Arab Emirates have established their diplomatic relations on January  22, 1977.

Nepal established its residential embassy in Abu Dhabi at the Charge d’ Affairs level on April 11, 2004 and upgraded at the Ambassadorial level on December 21,  2007.

The UAE has established its residential mission to Nepal on May 10,  2016 at the Ambassadorial level.
