KATHMANDU: The major opposition, Nepali Congress (NC), has said it could not endorse any bills that tend to infringe on people’s freedoms.
In a press conference organized by NC in its central office, Sanepa, Lalitpur, on Tuesday, NC Spokesperson Bishwa Prakash Sharma blamed that some provisions in the Bill relating to the Information Technology and formation of National Special Service had attempted to infringe on the people’s right to privacy that was guaranteed by the constitution of Nepal.
NC has also reaffirmed its stance that it would not support any bills having provision as five years of imprisonment and fine up to Rs 1.5 million for someone mocking at others in social networking site that contradict with the spirit and values of the democratic governing system.
Spokesperson Sharma clearly reaffirmed the NC’s stance that it would not endorse the Bill that tends to control the people’s freedoms to have a critical views on politicians or government. Furthermore, he said NC, which has been striving for freedom of expression since its establishment, will take to street and stand against these Bills in parliament as well.
According to him, NC has seriously acknowledged the attempt to foul the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a pact for the biggest grant to Nepal made with the USA government during the Nepali Congress’ leadership, on various pretext. “NC has,” he said, “demanded with the government to table the pact related to MCC in the parliament at the earliest as it is meant for assisting the development works of the county.”
On a different note, the Spokesperson shared that non-payment to sugarcane farmers for their produces was a cause for concern for NC and demanded with the government to take special initiatives to heed the demands of agitating sugarcane farmers.
Furthermore, the NC has noted that the ruling party, Nepal Communist Party’s Central Secretariat’s meeting deciding on the State 3’s name and its capital city was against the spirit of the federalism and it was an ‘unpleasant one’.
The major opposition, according to Sharma, has appealed to all the State assembly members, political parties and parliamentarians in the parliament to make decisions on the name of State 3 and its capital under any pressure and influence.
The NC, however, has extended its best wishes to the Visit Nepal Year 2020 campaign starting from January 1, 2020. The campaign aims to attract as many as 2 million tourists to Nepal and urged all the Nepalis at home and abroad to play their part in making the campaign a success.
