Import eases through Tatopani checkpoint, export still halted

KATHMANDU: The Tatopani checkpoint between Nepal and China has resumed operation from Thursday.

The checkpoint in Sindhupalchok popular for trading with China district has been distributed time and again after the 2015 Gorkha Earthquake.

Since the beginning of the current fiscal year 2077/78, the checkpoint has been closed and opened three times.

According to the Department of Customs, goods worth Rs 259.42 million were imported in the first three months of the current fiscal year.

Chinese traders have started sending goods of Nepali businessmen to Nepal by adopting high precautions at the checkpoints to prevent coronavirus infection.

Lal Bahadur Khatri, Chief of the Tatopani Customs Dry Port Office, said that the import of goods has started after the new modality of health standards was implemented.

Chief Khatri also said that arrangements have been made for the workers to load and unload goods in isolated areas with health standards.

According to Chief Khatri, four containers of goods are being imported from China daily since the checkpoint resumed on Thursday.

Despite the frequent opening and closing of the Tatopani checkpoint, no export has been made from this checkpoint so far.

Nepali workers loading goods at Tatopani checkpoint have been kept in quarantine, and arrangements have been made to undergo a PCR test every 14 days.
