Hong Kong charges protesters with rioting, released on bail

HONG KONG: A total of 40 people appeared in a Hong Kong court today who were charged with rioting in a recent protest in Hong Kong.

The recent protests had become violent after thousands of activists clashed with police near Beijing’s main representative office.

The protests that began in April have plunged Hong Kong into its biggest political crisis since 1997.

People charged were arrested after a peaceful demonstration on Sunday in the city’s central business district.

However, several of them were released on bail of US$128 and are due back in court on September 25. Meanwhile, the court has imposed a curfew from midnight to 6 am on them, while several have been ordered to not leave Hong Kong.

Among the charged, 13 are students, seven clerks, a Cathay Pacific pilot, nurses, teachers, nurses, salesmen, and workers. (Agencies)
