KATHMANDU: President of the Federation of Nepalese National Transport Entrepreneurs Saroj Sitaula has urged the government to introduce stringent legal provisions to prevent drivers and transport assistants from being assaulted during vehicle accidents and other incidents.
Speaking at the inauguration of the seventh general assembly of Tarkeshwor Yatayat Pvt Ltd in Kathmandu on Saturday, Sitaula said drivers and assistants are often attacked immediately after road accidents and called for legal arrangements to ensure their protection similar to those available to police and traffic police.
He said legal procedures are already in place to investigate road accidents and take action against those responsible, and stressed that physical attacks on drivers and assistants after accidents should therefore be stopped.
Sitaula also said transport entrepreneurs have been providing fare concessions to students, visually impaired people, persons with disabilities, women and senior citizens. He urged the government to immediately implement the policy or provide the 60 percent subsidy amount it had committed to provide for such concessions.
He also called on transport assistants and entrepreneurs to refrain from mistreating passengers and provide safe, dignified and quality services.
Sitaula said cooperation among transport entrepreneurs, drivers and assistants, and the government was essential to make the public transportation sector more organised and passenger-friendly.
