KATHMANDU: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has called on democratic and pro-constitution forces to come together to safeguard nationalism, development and the democratic system.
Speaking at a programme organised by the CPN-UML Tarkeshwor Municipal Committee under Kathmandu Constituency No. 6, Pokharel said cooperation among forces committed to the constitution and democracy was necessary on issues of national interest.
He stressed that party leaders and cadres must become more popular among the people to win their trust. He said the UML has been conducting awareness campaigns to strengthen its relationship with the public and has been mobilising its mass organisations more effectively.
Pokharel said the CPN-UML must maintain public confidence in its policies and programmes based on the principle of People’s Multiparty Democracy.
“We must win people’s confidence in our policies based on People’s Multiparty Democracy and present ourselves in accordance with the aspirations of the people,” he said.
He said the party could not move forward solely on the ideological foundation of the traditional communist movement, stressing the need to apply Marxism creatively and involve the younger generation to achieve superiority through competition.
Pokharel also acknowledged that public dissatisfaction had increased because governments led by the UML, despite prioritising economic and social development, had failed to create sufficient employment opportunities for young people.
He said the party must acknowledge its inability to create adequate employment and opportunities within the country and formulate policies and programmes that address people’s expectations and needs in the days ahead.
