KATHMANDU: The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) has suspended 439 drivers’ licenses on the charge of drink-driving.
The DoTM suspended licenses of those who were caught driving more than five times under the influence of alcohol at the recommendation of the Metropolitan Traffic Police Division (MTPD).
The MTPD has taken action against as many as 190, 690 drivers for drink-driving in the capital in the last eight years. The MTPD has banned drink driving since December 3, 2011.
The MTPD had taken action against 149, 216 drivers for the first time, 27,477 for the second time, 9,099 for the third time, 3,0 284 for the fourth time and 1,0174 drivers for the fifth time. The MTPD had started drilling a hole in the license of the driver each time caught for drink-driving since 2012.
SSP Basanta Kumar Pant, chief of MTPD, said the number of drink-driving cases has gone down since it was banned in 2011.
The MTPD has taken action against 22, 226 drunk drivers in the fiscal year 2074/75 and 21, 973 in the fiscal year 2075/76.
MTPD fines a driver Rs 1,000 for drink-driving and conduct classes form him/her on traffic rules.
