Sit-in demanding to marry off daughters at 16

KATHMANDU: Women of Banke on Thursday staged a sit-in in front of the District Administration Office, demanding that they should be allowed to marry off their daughters at the age of 16.

The existing law of Nepal does not allow marriage below 20. Taking to Chief District Office Madan Bhujel, the women have argued that 20  years  for  marriage for their daughters is not practical. ‘If they eloped with someone, it would be shame on families,” they said.

This demand has come at a time when the government is coming hard on child marriage rampant especially in poor and illiterate communities in the country.
