IT Bill discourages slanderous comments on social networking sites

KATHMANDU: The Information Technology (IT) Bill passed on Sunday has laid down a provision which incriminates those who defame, belittle or pass slanderous comments against someone on social networking sites.

According to the provision, those who post comments intending to defame or belittle somebody on social networking sites will be sentenced to five years in jail along with a fine of Rs 1.5 million.

The Development and Technology Committee of the House of Representatives (HoR) on Sunday passed the controversial Information Technology Bill with majority of votes.

The Bill will now be tabled in the House of Representatives. Once it is passed by both Houses, it will become law.

Lawmakers of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) voted in favor of the bill while the members of the main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) protested.
