NEW DELHI: The government of India has banned the export of onions with ‘immediate effect’ until further orders, Indian media reports have said on Sunday.
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry issued a statement made the decision to this effect in a bid to control the rising prices of the Indian kitchen staple.
The ministry’s decision comes in the wake of the soaring prices of onions.
The increase of onion prices has been attributed to a depleted supply following several months of incessant rainfall and flood-like situation in the country’s onion-producing states.
The retail prices of onion remained high at IRs 70-80 per kg in New Delhi last week. (Agencies)
