KATHMANDU: The government of Nepal has begun the most-coveted work of making Nepal as an open-wire free country.
The first phase of this ambitious project will cover all the three districts of Kathmandu Valley – Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Bhaktapur.
The electricity wire all laid underground is to reach in every house and the work is to be completed in three phases, says the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA).
After laying the electricity wires all underground within the Kathmandu Valley first, the other parts of the country will also get the electricity supplied through underground wires connecting to citizen’s house, according to NEA.
The AEI Industries is to lay the transmission line of 11 KV for about 400 km and of 400 volts for about 350 km in both the areas (Ratnapark and Kathmandu).
After receiving the debt at convenient terms, the work to lay the electricity wires under the ground in the areas of Ratnapark of Kathmandu and Maharajganj has been in the phase of instrument-examination and surveying stage undertaken by the Indian contractor company called AEI Industries.
Indian company owning the contract has begun the work from the Nepali month of Jestha is engaged in the management and survey before actually starting the work on the ground, discloses Manoj Silwal, the head of the Directorate of Project Management.

In the urban area of Kathmandu, even the wires connecting to provide services of telephone, internet, and cable are seen hanging overhead as we walk around the city.
The NEA has earlier planned to replace all the open wires by optical fibers (attached with the strength of 48-fibres). Kulman Ghising, Executive Director of NEA, says that laying all kinds of wires underground will reduce the accidents besides enhancing the look of the city and efficiency of supply of the electricity.
