KATHMANDU: The Media Council Bill is being tabled at the National Assembly meeting on Thursday three months after its registration.

The Bill is being tabled in the National Assembly meeting after the government agreed to amend some of its disputed provisions.

Various organizations including Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) had hit the streets after it was registered in the National Assembly saying that it was against the spirit of the Constitution. Main opposition Nepali Congress protested in the parliament demanding withdrawal of the Bill unconditionally.

The government gave a nod to amend the some of its controversial provisions following criticism it courted from all quarters.

The Bill contained controversial provisions including the one that would slap a fine of Rs 1 million on the erring journalist and remove the president and other officials of the Press Council at its discretion.
