SC issues show cause notice over pork barrel fund

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday issued a show cause in the name of the government for allocating Rs 60 million to lawmakers under the pork barrel fund.

Responding to a writ filed by advocate Parasmani Bhattarai demanding the abrogation of the fund, the constitutional bench of the apex court asked the Office of Prime Minister and Council of Ministers and Ministry of Finance why they allocated the amount to first-past-the-post lawmakers under the Physical Infrastructure Development Partnership program.

The bench comprising of Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, Justices Deep Kumar Karki, Kedar Prasad Chalise, Meera Khadka and Hari Krishna Karki asked the defendants to furnish clarification within seven days.

The fiscal budget had allocated Rs 60 million, increasing it from Rs 40 million to each lawmaker elected under the first-past-the-post electoral system to spend in his/her electoral constituencies.
