Administration orders demolishment of ‘chhau’ sheds

DOTI: The District Administration Office, Doti has issued orders to remove chhaugoth – a shed to seclude girls and women during menstruation – in the district.

The administration has warned of stern action against those keeping women and girls at sheds during menstruation.

A campaign has been launched in the district to dismantle the ‘chhau’ sheds used for dehumanizing women during the period.

Though there are no ‘chhau’ sheds in Silgadhi, the district headquarters, the structures are still in existence in rural areas of the district.

The police administration has started collecting data about such sheds in the rural areas of the district.

At least 12 women have so far lost their lives in the far-western region of Nepal due to the prevalence of such malpractice.
