Deputy Speaker Tumbahamphe’s resignation likely today

KATHMANDU: Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe who was said to be resigning Thursday has been postponed for today.

The resignation was postponed after the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) could not reach decision on the candidate to be fielded for the post of Speaker, said the sources.

It is learnt that incumbent Deputy Speaker herself is willing to take part in the elections of the Speaker while top leaders of the party are  in a mood to field Subas Nembang.

According to sources at the Parliament Secretariat, she is asked to resign before the parliament meeting scheduled for 1 pm today.

Tumbahamphe has been asked to resign from the post paving the way for the ruling NCP to file its candidate in the election of the speaker scheduled for December 30.

Deputy speaker and Speaker of the House of Representatives should represent from two different parties as per the provision of the Constitution.

Sources said senior-most member of the Parliament of Rastriya Janata Party Mahantha Thakur will chair the parliament meeting in the absence of Deputy Speaker and Speaker today.

The post of the Speaker has been lying vacant after Krishna Bahadur Mahara resigned from the post over the allegations of sexual abuse.
