NEW ZEALAND: New Zealand and France are set to lead efforts to stop the use of social media to organize or promote terrorism in the wake of the Christchurch attacks.

In March, a gunman killed 50 people in an attack on two mosques, while live-streaming the massacre on social media, particularly on Facebook.

New Zealand’s Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern informed that she would co-chair a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on 15 May to get countries and tech firms to agree to a pledge to reduce and eliminate terrorist content online.

She said she has already spoken to some chief executives, including Facebook boss Mark Zuckerberg, about the pledge – known as the “Christchurch Call”.

IN a statement, she said the March 15 terrorist attacks saw social media used in an unprecedented manner to promote an act of terrorism. (Agencies)
