Illegal North Korean hospital shut down in Nepal

KATHMANDU: Ne-Koryo Hospital established by North Korea at Damauli in Tanahun district has been shut down.

The hospital went packed up after the Nepal Medical Council (NMC) did not renew its licence after having found that the doctors had been working here at the hospital without work-permit.

Khabarhub had published a news headlined ‘Sans work permit, North Korean doctors work illegally in Nepal’  after they were found working without work permit in a sensitive health-related field like hospital on April 24.

The doctors had been working without work-permit here at the hospital. It is learnt that doctors had come to Nepal on a tourist visa and had been working at the hospital.

A total of 10 North Korean nationals were working at the hospital. Of them, eight staffers were doctors and two were working at the administrative department. Only four staffers – Lm Kum Sil, Kang Ryhon Ok, Kim Jong and Ri You Hui – had work permit. The rest were working illegally.

According to a staffer, the hospital has been shut down after the NMC did not renew its license.

In the third week of June, Tanahu district administration had monitored the hospital following the coverage of the hospital issue by Khabarhub. During the period, the team found  that four doctors’ work permit had already expired while the others’ was expiring soon. The hospital was shut down after their work-permit expired on Sunday.
