KATHMANDU: Today is December 22, the shortest day of the year.

The phenomenon is known as Winter Solstice that occurs when one of the Earth’s poles has its maximum tilt away from the Sun.

According to Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD), the sun rose at 6:51 am will set at 5:14 pm in Kathmandu on Sunday.

In the USA and some other areas in the Northern Hemisphere, the winter solstice marks the first day of winter.

However, the official date for the first day of winter varies depending on the country’s climate, and whether they follow astronomical or meteorological seasons.
