High court seeks copy of order sending Mahara to jail



KATHMANDU: Patan High Court on Friday sought a copy of an order made by Kathmandu District Court to send former Speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara to jail to serve his custody for an attempt to rape.

According to Registrar at the court Baburam Dahal, a single bench of Chief Judge Nahakul Subedi made the order while hearing an appeal petition filed by the former Speaker.

The next hearing will be done after the court receives the document, he said.

Mahara had filed a review petition at the court on Thursday demanding the court’s order to release him on general date.

A single bench of Judge Sudarshanraj Pandey on November 4 had made the order following the conclusion of a bail hearing for him.

Mahara has been accused of attempting to rape a female employee at Parliament Secretariat which he has been denying.

A rape case was filed at Kathmandu District Court against Mahara demanding seven and a half years imprisonment.

The District Attorney Office, Kathmandu had filed a case demanding a maximum of five years in jail for an attempt to rape and an additional two and a half years imprisonment for allegedly committing the crime by misusing power.

Mahara was arrested from his official residence in Baluwatar on October 6 after Kathmandu District Court issued an arrest warrant against him for allegedly raping the female employee.
