Patan High Court Chief Judge to hear Mahara’s appeal today

KATHMANDU: An appeal filed by rape-accused former Speaker of the House of Representatives Krishna Bahadur Mahara has been submitted for hearing on Friday.

Mahara moved the Patan High Court, challenging the decision of Kathmandu District Court to send him to custody on attempt-to-rape charges.

Chief Judge of the Patan High Court Nahakul Subedi has been assigned to hear the case. It is expected that Subedi will ask for his previous file submitted at the Kathmandu District Court in a preliminary hearing.

According to the record keeper at the high court, Baburam Dahal, Mahara on Thursday filed petition challenging the district court’s decision seeking an order to let him stay on bail until the verdict over the case.

The District Attorney Office Kathmandu had field a case at the Kathmandu District Court on attempt-to-rape charges seeking a seven-year jail term following a one-month-long investigation.

On October 5, A single bench of Judge of Kathmandu District Court Sudarshan Pandey had remanded Mahara for further investigation.

A party to the case who is not satisfied with the bail ordered by the court can file an appeal at the High Court in accordance with the Section 9730 of the National Criminal Procedure Act, 2017.

Mahara has been accused of raping Roshan Shahi, a staffer of federal Parliament Secretariat.
