80 % reconstruction work of Durbar High School completed

KATHMANDU: The Durbar High School (Bhanubhakta Secondary School), Ranipokhari reports 80 percent progress in its reconstruction works fully supported by the Government of China.

The Chinese Shanghai Construction company has owned up the contract to rebuild the school damaged by the 2015 April earthquake. Some 100 workers from China and Nepal are working on a daily basis to complete the project within the deadline, the construction company said. The works are supposed to be completed by the upcoming January-February. The new building was designed by China Aviation Planning and Designing Institute.

The new structure featuring a four-storey building with 40 rooms will occupy nine Ropanis (one Ropani is equivalent to 5,476 sq ft) of land and it is estimated to cost Rs 850 million. According to construction manager Rajendra KC, works are going on with a target of handing it over to the government within 19 months of the commencement of construction works.

The school was established in 1910 BS during the regime of the then first Rana Prime Minister Junga Bahadur Rana for teaching the children of the Rana rulers. It was opened for the general public in 1964 BS only for the Sanskrit classes. Children of the general public were allowed to study the English subject later.

Presently, the school operates classes on temporary huts built on the premises of Valmeeki Bidhyapeeth.
