NEW DELHI: A protest broke out in the Seelampur area of New Delhi today afternoon as India continued to sizzle over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).
The Supreme Court on Tuesday heard petitions alleging police atrocities on students who were holding protests against the CAA at the Aligarh Muslim University and Jamia Millia Islamia.
Several protests, mostly violent, erupted in New Delhi, India’s capital, as students and political leaders, took to the streets.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called the protests ‘deeply distressing’ and appealed for peace.
Meanwhile, Modi on Tuesday accused the opposition Indian Congress party of creating tensions in society.
Addressing an election rally in Jharkhand on Tuesday, PM Modi said that the Congress is spreading lies on the Citizenship Amendment Act.
He said that the Act doesn’t snatch away any right of an Indian citizen or causes any harm. (Agencies)
