NRN election stalled after voting machine goes phut

KATHMANDU: The election held to elect the new leadership of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRN), the umbrella organization of the Nepali diaspora living across the globe, was adjourned for Thursday.

The election was postponed for 10 am today after the voting machine went phut while voting was underway, said Election Commissioner Shiva Rijal.

“Technical glitches were noticed few minutes after the voting started,” said Rijal.

Voters had vented ire over the delayed election and smashed furniture.

As many as 76 candidates have filed nomination for 42 seats in the new leadership of the NRN.

Kumar Panta and Kul Acharya are in the fray for the post of chairperson. Similarly, Janaki Gurung and Dr Hemraj Sharma have filed nomination for the post of General Secretary.

President Bidya Devi Bhandari had inaugurated the ninth Nepali Global Conference of the NRN that began in Kathmandu on Tuesday with a slogan, ‘Ma, Mero NRN Ra Mero Nepal.”

A total of 2, 500 representatives from 81 countries are taking part in the three-day conference that will last until Thursday.
