9 shot dead in land dispute in India’s Uttar Pradesh

LUCKNOW: Nine people, including four women, have been shot dead in a clash over a land dispute in Sonebhadr district of Uttar Pradesh (UP), Indian media reports have said.

The incident occurred in Ubha village where villagers clashed with the village chief (gram Pradhan). The supporters of the chief opened fire at the villagers.

Reports said around 20 people have been injured, some critically. According to police, the bodies have been were brought to the district hospital. The death toll is expected to rise, police said.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath of UP has instructed the local administration to come up with a report on the incident. He has also instructed the director general (DG) of police to monitor the incident and ensure strict action against the wrongdoers.

According to eye witnesses, the two sides clashed over 90 bigha of land, which was purchased by the gram pradhan two years ago. The villagers opposed when the chief reached the spot to take the land’s possession.

Meanwhile, police have arrested two persons. (Agencies)
