KATHMANDU: The three-day Xavier Academy Model United Nations (XAMUN) 2019 seminar organized in Dhulikhel from September 12 proved to be a tremendous success with enthusiastic participants sharing and discussing various agendas.

Participants in committees discussed agendas that were directly or indirectly allied with the possibility of World Peace.

The event officially commenced with the opening ceremony which was glorified with the presence of prominent Chief Guest. Prof. Dr. Narad Nath Bharadwaj, Ambassador to the State of Qatar, and distinguished guests Prof Dr. Pramod Bahadur Shrestha, former Chairperson of Xavier Academy, Prajwol Koirala, Principal of Rivera International Academy, and Prakash Shrestha, Acting Pof Xavier Academy.

The Conference simulated five United Nations Committees: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC), The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UNCSW), and Press Crops.

UNSC’s delegates deliberated on the agenda “Assessing the Israel- Palestine Conflict.” With the Article 30 of the UNSC which states, “The Security Council shall adopt its own rules of procedure, including the method of selecting its President.” was put to good use as the president and the vice-president (the Crisis Director) shifted the core of the UNSC baffling the delegates and press likewise.

The crisis director intended to start a war that was accomplished since the UNSC was unable to prevent and, the committee dissolved.

The delegate of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Prasidha Sangat said, “UNSC was a completely unconventional type of committee with constant crisis and, my highlight would be being woken up at 3 am for a crisis.” The delegate added that he learned numerous things, for example: how to think promptly and make decisions.

UNHRC’s delegates debated on the agenda “The current human rights crisis in the middle east with special emphasis on the recent drone attacks and Yemeni Civil war.”  Seventy percent of the delegates were beginners, but they victoriously passed the resolution on the 3rd day.

UNCSW’s delegates discussed on the agenda “Combating violence against female migrant workers.” Some of the issues raised during the committee were: Safety of women migrants in transportation, the situation of women while migrating, security for people while relocating.

The delegate of The United States of America, Samriddhi Shah, said that for her representing the USA was both hectic and exciting. She was the most satisfied when she was able to argue to hold the stances of her country.

The delegates of DISEC discussed on the agenda “combating cyber terrorism.” Some of the topics raised were: defining terrorism and its raise, cyber-attacks hampering the development of developing countries, uses of internet for countering terrorist activities.

The delegate of the Republic of India, Sajan Shrestha said that the MUN taught him how to speak in front of a mass of people and about the United Nations and its functions along with it he learned to make quick critical decisions by the help of crisis sessions.

Unlike other committees, instead of representing a single country, the press corps members were allotted International News Outlets.
