Wildfire in community forest in Karve out of control

KATHMANDU: A forest fire that erupted in the Gorakhnath Community Forest, Bolde, Bethanchok Rural Municipality-3, in the southern part of Kavrepalanchok, has spiraled out of control since Sunday night.

Despite continuous efforts to contain the blaze, it continues to spread to nearby areas, including the Chisapani Community Forest and the popular tourist spot, Gajram Parbat.

Authorities have been battling the fire with the involvement of the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, local representatives, and members of the Forest Users Committee. However, the steep terrain and lack of water have severely hampered firefighting efforts.

Ward Chair Kuber Dhakal reported that despite anti-firing measures to protect the human settlement of Hurka Bhanjyang, the area remains at risk. He added that approximately seven hectares of the Gorakhnath Community Forest have been damaged so far. The fire has also reached Harka Bhanjyang and continues to spread towards Thalidanda, Chhalti, and Narayansthan, fueled by strong windstorms.

Forest officer Chinikaji Shrestha stated that even the treetops are engulfed in flames, making it exceedingly challenging to contain the fire. The rugged terrain further complicates the firefighting process.

Although no human settlements have been directly affected, residents are on high alert. The drinking water projects in Thalidanda and Harka Bhanjyang are at significant risk. Locals have also reported severe air pollution, with smoke causing breathing difficulties and eye irritation.

Earlier, a fire that broke out in the Mahabharat forest at Thamalekh Danda under the Mahabharat mountain range was controlled after four days using a helicopter, following a request from Bethanchok Rural Municipality through the Ministry of Home Affairs. Authorities are now closely monitoring the current situation and preparing additional measures to protect vulnerable areas.
