UN Secretary-General expresses sorrow over loss of lives, property in floods

KATHMANDU: The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed sorrow over the huge loss of lives and property triggered by deadly monsoon across the South and South-East Asia, including Nepal, India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar.

The UN Secretary-General has expressed condolences to the flood victims and wished for a speedy recovery to those injured in the incidents.

“The Secretary-General is saddened by the loss of life, displacement of people and destruction of property due to the heavy monsoonal rains and associated floodings across South and South-East Asia, most notably in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Myanmar,” reads the statement issued by Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General on Monday.

“The United Nations stands ready to work with the authorities in the affected countries as they respond to the humanitarian needs resulting from this ongoing monsoon season,” the press statement says.

Meanwhile, the Federal Parliament of Nepal meeting also has been put off to give time to parliamentarians to go to their respective constituencies, districts to help with rescue and relief efforts at this time of sorrow and grief caused by flooding and landslides caused by incessant rains since seven days across the country.

The federal, state and local governments are active to reach immediate relief to the victims and affected people in Nepal.
