DAMAULI: Bhanu Municipality in Tanahu has decided to provide around 70 percent of subsidy while procuring machines used for producing ‘Birke Topi’ also known as Bhanu Bhakta-styled cap.

The cap was popular during the time of poet Bhanubhakta Acharya some 200 years back in Tanahu where Bhanubhakta was born.

The cap is mostly worn by men coupled with traditional ‘daura suruwal’ during formal functions.

The machine used for producing the Bhanubhakta caps costs Rs 17,500.

A total of six women who were earlier in June imparted training on making such caps would chip in the rest of the amount to buy machines, according to Bhanu municipality.

Bhanubhakta also is known as Adikavi (the first poet) of the Nepali language. He is also one of the luminaries of Nepal.

According to the Municipality’s Deputy Mayor Aasha Thapa, the machine would not only help in income generation for the local women but would also help in the production of such caps.

The move will also contribute to the preservation of traditional value of iconic caps that was once the traditional attire of men in Tanahu, according to her.
