Mother sells off daughter for Rs 1 lakh in India

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) rescued a 15-year-old girl sold-off by her mother to traffickers for IRs one lakh.

Even though an FIR has been lodged, no arrests have been made so far, Indian media reports said on Sunday.

The victim, meanwhile, has been shifted to a shelter home.

The incident, in fact, happened on September 8 when Rashmi’s (name changed) mother took her to a hotel in Nizamuddin saying that she would take her to her sister’s place.

The mother then made a deal with a man, named Abdul. She told Rashmi that since she needed to go somewhere, a man named Shahid would take her home.

Shahid, however, took Rashmi to his house in Ishwar Colony in Bawana in Delhi.

When they reached Shahid’s house, there were several other girls who asked her to wear a wedding dress, according to the report.

When Rashmi asked the girls, she came to know that her mother had sold her off for Rs one lakh.

The girls then told her that she would be sleeping with customers to recover the amount.

Rashmi, however, managed to flee with just Rs 10 in her pocket, took a shared auto ride, went back to her locality, and asked her neighbors for help.

With the neighbors’ assistance, she was rescued and was taken to a local police station. She narrated the entire episode to the police.

She also told the police that her mother sold her one-year-old brother to a trafficker to pay off the debt. (Agencies)
