Overcrowded Venice is now the victim of ‘over-tourism’

VENICE: Venice received more than 36 million international tourists in 2017, a rise of 10% rise compared to the previous year. While travelers fuel the city’s economy, they’re also the cause of the biggest problem: overcrowding.

According to the Port Authority, from April to October, an estimated 32,000 cruise ship passengers disembark here daily. In August, an additional 465,100 day-trippers make their way to the city, adding to the chaos of an additional 2.2 million tourists who will stay overnight, reveals the National Tourism Agency figures.

Many Venetians express their concern that everyone should have a chance to experience the beauty of their city, but say that a constant swell of tourists is ruining the experience for everyone. It is the classic case of adverse effects of over-tourism in which aesthetic beauty and quality of the city is getting compromised. (Agencies)
